Data Stewardship Responsibilities

Having access to institutional data comes with data stewardship responsibilities. Data stewardship has broad applications including, but not limited to:

  • Only accessing data necessary to perform job and making sure others do the same
  • Maintaining confidentiality where sensitive data/information is concerned
  • Making every effort to ensure data is interpreted/presented correctly
  • Understanding the big picture
  • Comparing apples-to-apples
  • Leveraging available summaries and data resources; making the best use of everyone’s time
  • Guiding others who are seeking data to ensure time/energy is not wasted on non-essential pursuits
    • Need to know vs nice to know
    • Data back to 1908?
  • Saying “No,” when needed
